Business leadership organisation the Swindon & Wiltshire Initiative has urged prime minister Theresa May not to take her eye off the Brexit ball ahead of June’s snap general election.
Today (Wednesday) the House of Commons backed the PM by a margin of 522 votes to 13 – well above the two-thirds majority needed – to hold a snap election.
Ian Larrard, director of the Initiative, which is part of Business West, said: “Evidence from our Q1 local business survey suggests that companies in Swindon and Wiltshire are deeply concerned about the uncertainty being created by Brexit negotiations.
“Given that the political impetus will shift away from Brexit negotiations to the general election in the coming weeks, government needs to do all that it can to reassure business that they haven’t taken their eye off the ball.
“Business craves certainty and stability, yet the events of the last 12 months show that this can sometimes be a lot to ask for.
“To what extent the government can provide this will no doubt be crucial come June 8.”
