Figures compiled by jobs site Adzuna show there are 0.12 jobseekers per vacancy in the town – a figure shared with Oxford, Winchester, and Warrington.
The easiest place to find a job is Cambridge with 0.05 jobseekers per vacancy. But in Sunderland there are 2.5 jobseekers for every post.
However, Adzuna calculate their figures by dividing the number of people claiming unemployment benefits with the number of advertised jobs in the town.
It does not look at the suitability of candidates for the positions available – and that’s important in towns like Cambridge where many positions are in the tech sector, and would appeal to graduates from across the UK and internationally.
This July there were 88,841 vacancies in the South West, according to the report, offering an average salary of £29,321. Average salaries in the region have fallen by 1.7 percent since the same period last year.
