The historic hotel, owned by Arkells Brewery, has been recognised for its quality of service, excellent housekeeping as well as an improved breakfast offering.

Head chef and joint manager Joel Lear has also kept his two rosettes for the coaching inn’s restaurant.

Joel runs the hotel with his wife Anna, who is delighted with the award. “This is an industry mark and shows just how far we have come since taking over a year ago,” she said.

“The staff have been fantastic and this is one of the reasons we have been able to achieve this in what feels like record time. We also need to thank Arkells for all of the investment in the building.”

The hotel has undergone a makeover with almost all rooms being redecorated and refurbished while the dining room and conference and event space have also been given a more modern feel.

There are further plans to develop some of the outer buildings and the court yard area.

Joel said of his two rosettes for the restaurant: “When coming here I wanted to bring a fresh approach to the food offering.

"We have traditional dishes but by linking up with local and regional suppliers we have been able to create an a la carte menu that rivals anything in the area.

"I am very proud of what the kitchen team have done in such a short time.”
