Housing association becomes first in sector to ‘Get Deaf Aware’

Housing association Aster Group has become the first in its sector to Get Deaf Aware.

After being told by its colleagues that communicating with hearing-impaired customers was often a challenge, the people training team started looking into deaf awareness training courses, and enrolled team members with Get Deaf Aware.

Around 30 members of staff have completed the training, with sessions covering everything from how to identify someone is deaf, a look at the technology available, and simple sign language.

Jessica Scull, people development coordinator at Aster said: “It so important that we’re able to communicate with our customers regardless of any impairment they may have.

“From start to finish, it’s been a real pleasure organising our starter session with Get Deaf Aware – we’ve now put together two training days which are purely practical and tailored to Aster, including discussing rent, repairs and wellbeing with our customers.

“We look forward to more colleagues becoming deaf aware and providing our customers with a good service.”

Another 20 members of staff are due to take the course in January.
