Picture by Matt InwoodA Wiltshire business has smashed the world record for producing world's largest jute bag. Westbury-based Cotton Bag Co unfurled the bag – which is as big as a tennis court – on International Plastic Bag Free Day (Wednesday, July 3).

The 22.5m wide by 14.6m tall bag easily beat the existing record by 11.6m in length and 6.1m in width.

Woodlands Industrial Estate-based Cotton Bag Co produce eco bags, supplying a whole range of businesses across the UK with an alternative to single-use plastic bags.

Not only did they want to show their customers what is possible, but they also wanted to take part in Plastic Free July and encourage people to use more eco bags that are made from plant-based materials or paper.

The firm's sister company, the Paper Bag Co, already holds the record – set in 2015 – for the World’s Largest Paper Bag.

Managing director Jon Marling explained: "We make every effort to figure out how we can support sustainable solutions using environmentally friendly materials that are easy to reuse and recycle such as jute, cotton, or paper."

Students from Fitzmaurice School in Bradford-on-Avon helped teams from Cotton Bag Co and digital marketing agency, Varn, to decorate the bag. The giant bag will be sut into pieces for children to turn into their own souvenir bags.

The bag was lifted by Sparrow Crane Hire, with a frame truss by Stage Lighting Services.
