The promotion, part of prime minster Theresa May's cabinet reshuffle on Monday (January 8), means the MP – who represents Devizes and Marlborough – will attend Cabinet and become member of the Privy Council.

She joined the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy after the June 2017 reshuffle as Minister of State for Climate Change.

Claire has an extensive business background, working in banking and finance for the Bank of America, McKinsey & Company, and Credit Suisse before joining the Conservative party in 2006 and working for shadow chancellor George Osborne.

After her election to Parliament in 2010 she served as parliamentary private secretary to Philip Hammond, who was then the Secretary of State for Defence, and as Government assistant whip.

In 2014 she was appointed rail minister, but quit the post in July 2016.
