TechSwindon looks towards a virtual inaugural summit in November

An ambitious new project to create a 'British Silicon Valley' in Swindon could be launched in the virtual sphere.

Launched last June at Nationwide HQ in Swindon, TechSwindon had intended to build its community of entrepreneurs with events throughout the year, culminating in a physical summit on November 5, showcasing the very best of Swindon’s tech innovation.

But with social-distancing measures still in effect the organisation is now "working on a schedule that allows for virtual engagement if large gatherings are not permitted."

The team behind TechSwindon has already moved its regular Founders meet-ups online and says holding the summit – encompassing a mix of technically focused workshops, thought leadership seminars and networking activity – virtually "is a really exciting prospect to allow us to engage with more of our community, and beyond."

Meanwhile, the initiative's busy schedule of events continues online: next Wednesday (June 24) TechSwindon members can join in a webinar with entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter, who established Sports Division from the back of a van and developed the business to become Europe’s largest independent sports retailer.

He used his success to establish private equity business, West Coast Capital, which invests in brands, property, e-commerce and big data analytics, and The Hunter Foundation, which has invested in excess of £ 80m in entrepreneurship and enterprise, poverty alleviation and education.

On Thursday, June 25 TechSwindon members have the chance to join the FemTech Forum, and to hear and learn from some of the most inspiring founders, innovators, investors and influencers in FemTech, on a wide range of topics, including fertility, sexual health, designing products for modern women, the gender gap in medical research and more.

And on Friday, June 26 Enterprise Nation and Amazon will be hosting the first virtual Amazon Academy, featuring an in-depth interview with former Dragons' Den investor Jenny Campbell, and panel discussions with online retailers and experts in HR, accounting, IP and law.
